From The Bride… When I was 7 years old and lugging my softball gear around the rec fields near my house, I never dreamed that my groom- to-be was the lanky little boy with dark hair play-wrestling with my brother on the side lines in the grass. And thats how our story began – we spent our whole entire childhood visiting the same athletic fields, restaurants, banks, and grocery stores but always just barely missing one another. Fast forward to October of 2007, Will was a freshman in college at SPSU and came back to his Alma Mater for the homecoming football game. I had just transfered to Landmark and his best friend Sam “introduced” us. In the words of Will, he was smitten. Shortly thereafter he sent me this little snippet in a love note, “I don’t know your favorite color or favorite ice cream flavor or favorite song, but I do know that those ocean blue eyes dance when you smile at me and that is enough to completely capture me.” SWOOONNNN.

I wasn’t even allowed to date though and knew my parents would never go for me dating a boy in college. So, we kept in touch every once in a while, but the flame burned out. Fast forward to to March of 2011, I was going with my brother to a college orientation at ABAC in Tifton. I mistakenly thought this was the school Will now attended and sent him a text telling him I was visiting his school that day. He responded and said ” You’re coming to SPSU?” Whoops, I didn’t even know where he went to college. (Face to palm!) We shared a laugh and a good conversation and I decided to look him up on Facebook afterwards. I couldn’t help but noticing how handsome he was. Handsome + sweet + he loves the Lord? Score. I told my mom that night I was going to get that boy to take me on a date 😉

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m not a fan of ladies pursuing men, I genuinely believe that this is the man’s responsibility. Well, I here I was pining for this man and reminiscing over how sweet he had been in days past, but I had no way of “being pursued” by him. He was clueless that I was interested, we never saw each other. He lived an hour and a half away, and to make matters worse when he had liked me years ago I just brushed it off and quit talking to him. I obviously had nothing going for me here. So what did I do? I kinda broke my rule and decided I would text him once a week and if he was interested and it was meant to be he would get the hint…my gosh that took forever! This one text a week went on for a solid month. I would text him, we would have these awesome conversations, he would be so sweet & fun and then…crickets. I wouldn’t hear from him until the following week! Finally after four weeks of this I was about to say, ” Oh well!” on the whole idea when Will asked me if I would like to spend a Saturday with him! YAY! Finally!

The following week he came and picked me up and I hopped up in his truck and we rode country roads and went fishing at Lake Raymond. The whole day was just fun and easy. I never was nervous or worried what he thought. It was just easy like two old friends just having the best day. That is until he suggested we watch the sunset from the bed of his truck while we slow danced and he sang to me. DOUBLE SWOON. My heart was totally gone. I came home that night and told my mom that I was going to marry that boy, I was sure of it. From that night on we have been pretty much inseparable. There have been ups and downs and we have faced many trials, but through it all we have grown closer and our love for one another has grown deeper. I couldn’t ask for a more kind, caring, loving or Godly example to lead me. Isn’t it so amazing how God works things out if we just trust in His Sovereign plan!

As wedding photographers we see how easily couples can become consumed in the wedding planning process and as a bride I knew I didn’t want all that that encompassed. We talked about eloping in the mountains, but after we bought our new home, Simply Sarah Farms, we knew it was the perfect place for a small intimate wedding. Will proposed and we planned the whole affair in exactly 8 weeks. My vision for the wedding was simple elegance. Our farm has a cabin in the woods so I wanted to play off of the natural elements that was offered there and lots of elegant organic touches.

For starters, I had this picture in my head of all 100 of our guests eating off of one big long farm table under the trees. So off to work my dad and his friends went making 12 ten foot long wooden farm tables. Our amazing florist, Lindsay Coletta decorated these tables with greenery garland that she foraged the morning of the wedding, pomegranates, figs, and then she added in pops of bold red and white floral buds. These florals paired with tall taper candles on bronze candlesticks and pillar candles made for a table scape prettier than I ever imagined.

The second thing I knew I wanted but was a little difficult to make happen was getting married in the river. Since we bought the farm we spend nearly every weekend out on the river kayaking, tubing and fishing. Everyone thought I was crazy when they heard my plan but I knew we could make it happen. We started going down to the river weeks ahead of time and making a flat path for guest to stand and walk, changing the course of water up stream, and cleaning up tree limbs and debris. My talented dad handmade a beautiful arbor for us to get married under and we used ferns as aisle markers down into the shallow banks. We used a canoe for the getaway from the ceremony. It was perfect! I am so pleased with how everything turned out and so very thankful for all of our friends, family, and amazing team of vendors who made our day a possible!

More rustic celebrations right this way!

I never gave a second thought to March Madness – this is, until it came to the pages of SMP. We brought you March Madness, real wedding style and we’re continuing the countdown to your bracket winner. But first, let’s stop and spend some time with this chic little number that took home the “modern” crown. It’s a urban wedding designed by Foraged Floral with an industrial-chic twist, and thanks to Olivia Leigh Photographie the party can continue in The Vault.

Industrial Chic Restaurant Reception

From Foraged FloralChristina and Howard had a vision of an intimate and naturally styled wedding in downtown Chicago. They were inspired by the unique decor that The Kitchen (a completely new restaurant and venue – we were one of their first weddings!) offered with its industrial charm, but also wanted the environment to be cozy, and intimate, for their guests to enjoy and relax. They decided on not having a bridal party at all, so their friends and family could all relax and not stress about anything. We worked together for many months planning and perfecting the vision they had, which included many seasonal inspired florals to compliment the botanical prints they loved, as well as some beautiful handcrafted pieces.

Their ceremony took place at Bond Chapel, on the University of Chicago’s campus, where Christina attended. The chapel has beautiful stained glass windows, amazing wooden details and a cozy atmosphere. We brought in a classically trained pianist to serenade guests with music that you wouldn’t find at your normal wedding (more classical piano pieces from operas and theatrical events, no Canon in D here!), which really set the tone for a sophisticated and unique ceremony. After the ceremony, guests were transported to The Kitchen, just along the river in downtown Chicago, for a delicious and unique family style dinner among long, wooden communal tables and lounge areas.

As their florist and event designer, I really loved designing their arrangements and bouquets, but some of my favorite details were the smallest ones – the vintage botanical print book that Velvet Raptor made into a guestbook, the fact that they hand wrote each couple a letter on handmade paper, which designated where they would sit at the family style tables with calligraphy by BUSHYL, and even the signature drinks they crafted together. I have to admit, watching each guest open the envelope with their seating assignment listed on it, only to find a handwritten note from the couple was the sweetest thing, and something I know they will cherish for a long time.

The florals used for Christina and Howard were something special and I spent many weeks planning out exactly what flowers I wanted to used to fit their theme and warm palette. We incorporated a large amount of seasonal flowers like local dahlias, garden roses, fall foliage, scabiosa, and we were lucky enough to get peonies too! 🙂 SO rare in October, but we were so happy!

Olivia Leigh, who is nothing short of amazing, captured the day with film and digital images, which I love! Olivia truly knows how to make everything pop and was so impressed with the images she passed along to us after their wedding.

Nothing was missed, as they wanted their guests to feel at home, comfortable and loved. Christina and Howard are some of the nicest, most gracious and wonderful people out there, and they deserved nothing but the best for their October celebration in Chicago! Congrats to Christina and Howard!

I grew up in a college bball town (go SU!) so while I’ve always loved March Madness, it wasn’t until SMP got involved did my own manic really begin. We shared our favorite weddings and you, our amazing readers, narrowed them down week by week and today we reveal the winner. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s spend the morning in Ireland where wedding fantasies come true. With Peaches & Mint behind the lens and Pearl & Godiva working their design magic, our 4th place is a can’t miss!

From Pearl & Godiva… Many couples dream of an intimate wedding, sharing these magical moments with just their nearest and dearest, on a day which reflects their own personal style from start to finish. We were so honoured to make this a reality for Grace and Paul, which took place in the spell-bounding environs of the Crom Castle on Lough Erne in Northern Ireland.

Crom Castle is an enchanting historic castle which sits beside Lough Erne, the perfect backdrop for an exquisite wedding. This waterside kingdom was a huge inspiration for the day, given that guests took a boat ride along Lough Erne to join the couple celebrate their their wedding ceremony in the ancient stone chapel.

Inspired by the words of Henry David Thoreau, we began creating a day completely unique to such a loving couple.

“If you have built castles in the sky
Let not your dreams go to waste;
Just build the foundations under them.”
~ Henry David Thoreau.

Following months of preparation, on a glorious June morning we made our way to Crom Castle to create a timeless and elegant wedding for Grace and Paul. To see our design come to life was dreamlike, from the bespoke stationery, hand-crafted linens, to the luscious florals, tumbling out of every nook, adorning all surfaces. Together with Magva Design & Letterpress we drew inspiration from the wooden boats that sail by the castle. Painterly blooms by Floral Earth crept across hand dyed tablecloths, with florals barely contained in their over-sized urns, teaming beautifully with glinting gold flatware and gold rimmed glassware.

Grace and Paul’s love was captured in the low light of dusk, as mist raised from the lake and cloaked the landscape with cool wispy light.

Simple. Earthy. Romantic. These were the three words this bride used as design inspiration for summertime wedding at Villa San Juan Capistrano. Inspired by a recent trip to Tuscany, the couple wanted to bring that same old world Italian charm to California and we say, mission accomplished. Jen Huang photographed the beauty, and the rest of our day is officially booked scrolling through The Vault.

From The Bride… I have always envisioned a wedding in Tuscany with cobblestones and olive trees all around. However, we knew that it would be very difficult for many of our friends and family to travel. After looking at several different places in California, we fell in love with the Villa San Juan Capistrano. This beautifully restored house tucked away in greenery brought us back to our amazing time in Italy.

We wanted to keep it simple, earthy, and romantic to compliment the natural beauty of the venue with mercury glass candles, sheer linens, pastel flowers, and organic calligraphy. One thing I learned from wedding planning is to work with your surroundings coupled with Pinterest.

One of our favorite moments from the day was sitting at our table, listening to HIRIE play, and just enjoying the view. It was such a joy to see all our family and friends come together to celebrate our special day. Our wedding was everything I imagined it would be and more. From the food to the music, it was nothing short of amazing. I was in tears seeing for the first time what the vendors has created and our photographer captured it so well!

I always get a little giddy when someone in the wedding industry ties the knot – because let’s be honest – you know their Big Day will be amazing. So when Catherine of The Charm Studio shared her beautiful photos by The McCartneys, I gushed over the details longer than a care to admit. Catherine worked her paper design magic to create hand-drawn stationery with custom lettering by Bien Fait Calligraphy and the result is one of the prettiest invitation suites to EVER grace our pages. Go see lots more waiting in The Vault!

From The McCartneys Photography… Catherine & Andrew were married in August at the church she grew up in and Andrew’s cousin, Father Steve, was their officiant. The ceremony was held at the absolutely beautiful church in Glenview, IL, with the reception just a few minutes down the road at the Glen View Club, which happens to be where Catherine’s parents had their wedding celebration as well!

Paper goods are always the first impression a guest will have of your wedding, and Catherine made sure to have an incredible impact. As the owner, designer and illustrator of The Charm Studio, Catherine’s guest knew her invitations would be especially beautiful…and boy, were they all right! Catherine created a hand drawn Fitzpatrick/Sullivan family crest which combined elements from each of their own family crests, and carried out this theme with hand drawn blooms throughout all of her paper goods: charger menus, escort board, ceremony programs, welcome bags, save the dates & of course the invitations, which included custom calligraphy by Bien Fait Calligraphy. Catherine also designed her own custom-made wedding dress, which was inspired by her mother’s, wore a veil and headpiece designed by her friend, and a bracelet which was made by her grandmother for her mom when she was married!

Elegance upon elegance with hydrangea blue everywhere. Fleur hung lush greens from the chandeliers and dressed each table with beautiful white blooms atop La Tavola Linens. After heartfelt toasts, all of Catherine & Andrew’s wedding guests crowded the dance floor with the High Society Band!

A little bit more about the couple…

Catherine & Andrew were introduced by a friend and they started dating in the summer of 2013. One year later they had dinner plans and Andrew forgot his wallet, so he ran back to get it before they continued on with dinner at a french restaurant. When they got home afterwards Andrew’s place was decorated with roses, petals and candles, serving as the most romantic setting to propose to Catherine with a stunning ring they hand selected together!

In planning for their wedding, Catherine & Andrew left not one detail overlooked! Catherine has a studio in downtown Chicago where she designs lovely wedding invitations & paper goods at The Charm Studio. We can only imagine how many times she was asked what her own wedding invitation might look like leading up to her & Andrew’s wedding day! Needless to say, we were absolutely blown away. By hand, Catherine drew a crest combining elements from each of their family crests, which was used throughout their wedding on the invitation (with gorgeous custom calligraphy by Bien Fiet Calligraphy) as well as their escort board, menu chargers, table numbers and more!

After a beautiful ceremony at the church Catherine grew up with, we arrived to Glen View Club where her parents are members and were absolutely in love with its exquisite architecture and landscaping. With a beautiful palette of white, light green and hydrangea blue, Catherine & Andrew’s wedding celebration was timeless and elegant! Their wedding day was blessed with endless sunshine and we couldn’t get enough of the Club’s giant oak trees, which made for a perfect portrait spot with this most classic bride & groom!

Guests enjoyed cocktail hour on the patio before entering one of the most grand settings where greens hung from giant chandeliers, Catherine’s hand-drawn crest marked each table, and Fleur brightened up the light-filled room with white & green centerpieces. Catherine & Andrew were seated at a long table with their bridal party, all of whom dined on the most darling hydrangea blue plates. After sneaking Catherine & Andrew out for photos during a perfect sunset, they cut their cake and were welcomed to the dance floor by High Society Band. We couldn’t help but smile when guests immediately flooded the dance floor!

When Callie and Vince first began planning their wedding day, they made a must-have list (if you haven’t done this yet, do it!) as a jumping off point. Number one? A mountain setting. Number two? A venue that would fit their every pre/post wedding need. The results? Wedding day perfection. With Lane Dittoe on hand capturing every second, Love This Day Events coordinated the magic and honestly it just doesn’t get any better. Watch the moving Velare film below and see it all in The Vault!

From The Bride…When Vince and I first started brainstorming on where we wanted to get married, we had a few top priorities.  First of all, we knew we wanted to get married in the mountains.  I grew up in Colorado, and we spend a lot of time there still despite living in San Francisco.   Secondly, we wanted a venue that would allow for all our wedding events to be onsite as well as accommodations.  Many of our guests were going to be traveling, so we wanted to create a fun and stress-free weekend that would allow our guests to fully enjoy the great outdoors of Colorado without having to worry about transportation between events.

Devil’s Thumb Ranch was a perfect match.  Situated in the middle of 6,000 acres with sweeping views of the Rocky Mountains, it both a stunning backdrop and also provided an abundance of activities!  We knew it was the venue for us the second we stepped foot on the property.  Vince and I both love spending time outdoors with our dog, so Devil’s Thumb Ranch seemed to reflect us as a couple.  When looking at past weddings held at Devil’s Thumb Ranch, I kept on bookmarking the ones that were designed and planned by Kara Delay of Love this Day Events.  We reached out to her and immediately knew she would be the one to help us create the perfect wedding weekend.  Our mutual love for chocolate labs was only the beginning of us becoming fast friends.  Since we had already seen (and fell in love with) so many of the weddings Kara had planned, we knew we could completely trust her to help us create something that aligned with what we had envisioned for our wedding.  I was in full-time grad school and working, so I didn’t have a ton of time to dedicate to planning.  And while we had some requests and ideas, we put our complete trust in Kara to make suggestions and decisions, including helping us hire our other vendors.  She enlisted the amazing Gretchen from Yonder Floral and Décor House to help pull our vision together.  The two of them designed and executed such a beautiful wedding, and we could not have been happier with the results.  Everything down to Charlie’s floral collar was perfect.

Vince and I agreed that the setting of our venue was so beautiful itself that we didn’t want to do anything over the top in terms of our flowers or décor.  We decided to incorporate whites, blushes, and sage into our flowers and tablescapes, with lots of greenery!  The interior of the barn where the reception was held has beautiful exposed beams and a gorgeous fireplace.  We didn’t want to take away from the rustic beauty of the space, so we filled the tables with low-set flowers and lots of candles.  Kara strung some drapery from the beams and added a couple of chandeliers to pull the whole look together.  It was pretty amazing walking in for the first time and seeing our vision become reality.

We felt so lucky to work with the vendors that we did for our wedding.  While some knew each other and some did not, they all worked so well together throughout the planning process and on our wedding day.  For our photographer, we were recommended Lane Dittoe, who was based both in Boulder and Los Angeles.  Logistically it worked perfectly, as we were able to do our engagement photos in San Francisco, and then he did our wedding in Colorado, without having to do too much traveling.  He has such a calm demeanor that put Vince and me at ease in front of the camera.  And as you can see in the photographs, he is extremely talented.

Micah and Will from Velare did an unbelievable job on our wedding film.  The highlight film turned out to be beyond our expectations, and we could not be happier.  They were such a treat to work with, also making us feel comfortable in front of the camera.  Simply put, they are some really cool dudes with wild talent, and we feel so lucky that we were able to have them shoot our special day.  We are anxiously awaiting our feature film!

On the days surrounding the wedding, our guests enjoyed mountain biking, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and more! Being somewhat of a destination wedding, it was the perfect place to organize a weekend of events for our guests to show our appreciation for their travels.  Friday kicked off with a game day on the front lawn of the ranch followed by a casual BBQ rehearsal dinner for all guests.  While the girls were getting ready on Saturday, the boys hiked around the property playing a round of Frisbee golf, with our girl Charlie happily running around beside them.  Having our dog there for the weekend and a part of our wedding was especially important to us.  She served as a floral girl of sorts, and my heart still melts every time I see an image or video of Vince walking down the aisle with her.

The whole weekend went off without a hitch (at least as far we know!), and we had an absolute blast.  While we were able to share this special time in our lives with all our most loved family and friends, we also felt like we were able to cherish each moment together as a couple and acknowledge the true meaning of the weekend.  We took a few deliberate moments to step away to take it all in and just have some private time together.  We were both pretty emotional leading up to the ceremony and throughout the ceremony, but we were able to let loose during the reception and dance the night away as a newly married couple.
