We Found the Ultimate New York City Wedding

Every now and then a wedding comes across your desk that stops you dead in your tracks. I call them the weddings with the trifecta of pretty – beautiful photography, fresh design moments, and a bride and groom whose love practically leaps off the page. The incredible Heather Waraksa and ever swoon joined forces for this Manhattan affair and the result is ALL of the above. Scroll on for taxi cab place cards, cronut favors, and don’t miss the sweet words written by the groom.

From the Groom… Arielle and I got engaged at the Plaza Hotel under the guise of a very over the top staycation. Having grown up in New York, I felt like it was only appropriate for our engagement and later our wedding to touch upon iconic New York if possible. I had the hotel set up our room to include champagne and originally had asked the concierge to just throw a few flowers about the room (nothing spelled out or anything) as I continued to think that the proposal part would be a surprise for Arielle (I should have realized that how do you sell the woman you are dating that a staycation at The Plaza hotel after dating for years wouldn’t have something more to it!) We walk into the room and spelled out on the bed is “I ❤️ u” in rose petals…well if I thought there was any surprise left, I immediately got down on one knee and asked her to marry me!

When we started to look for our wedding venue, that same New York sentiment kept playing in our heads. We looked at quite a few venues that definitely had that New York vibe but once we saw the rooftop where we would hold the ceremony at TriBeCa Rooftop, we knew it was the spot for us. Now as you can imagine, the rooftop is located in TriBeCa, and it has the most amazing view of New York in both directions. To the south, there is a backdrop of One World Trade Center and to the north the Empire State Building. The idea of getting married while surrounded by the entire New York skyline at sunset was all we needed.

From there, we put everything else together with a similar theme – from our invitations, which was a custom watercolor drawing of the street we live on in Greenwich Village, to the taxi cab place card holders. We decided that as our last piece to the wedding, we had to have Dominique Ansel Cronuts (a cross between a croissant and a donut, for which people usually wait on line for hours to get!) at our wedding as we love Dominique Ansel and thought that it would be a super fun NYC gift to all of our guests who most likely would never be able to get one otherwise. Arielle was so intent on making this happen, that while at his store in the West Village she wrote him a note on the back of a receipt begging to find a way to have 250 fresh cronuts at TriBeCa Rooftop on the day of our wedding. To our amazement, the store manager came over and told us that it would be their honor and the rest was history!

Arielle wanted to add a serious fall vibe to our fall wedding and with the help of Amy Febinger of Bourgeon picked out an entire scheme to decorate the wedding. The evening started with cream and peach hued flowers that made up the chuppah at the ceremony. Beautiful hand-made copper silks tied all of the bouquets together matching the copper lanterns lining the aisle. As we got ready to hold the ceremony, the skyline was set afire by the light from the setting sun over the Hudson River to our west. Simon and Garfunkel started playing and we were ready to take our stroll down the aisle.

As most people who have been a bride or groom will tell you, the wedding goes by incredibly fast. Like lightning fast. A week or two before the wedding, we had both been told this numerous times and given advice like “make sure you don’t miss it while caught up in everything”. After hearing this enough times, we made sure in the middle of the wedding while everyone was out on the dance floor to sneak away for just two minutes and to have it all by ourselves. We snuck up the stairs to the balcony overlooking the entire venue and sat just the two of us watching. I remember soaking in the music and watching all of our friends dancing, noticing where all of our family members were scattered about the room. It was the first moment all night that we felt like we really had to ourselves to hold hands, to actually take a moment and to see everyone who was there even if it was from a distance. I am so glad I actually listened as its the clearest memory of the entire whirlwind of a night.

A Wildly Romantic Wedding in the Arizona Desert

What began as a last-minute “plus one” to a wedding became a forever kind of love for Marian and Mark. And when they began planning their own big day, they knew showcasing the Arizona scenery was a top priority. A soft color palette and natural greens complemented the setting, and Rachel Solomon told the story of the day in stunning fashion.

From the bride… Mark and I met through my older brothers about 5 years ago, when he moved from the Bay Area to Arizona. We started dating about a year later when he needed a last minute plus-one to a friend’s wedding. My brothers thought that I might be able to suggest one of my friends as a suitable date, but I offered to go instead. I always thought Mark was fun, kind, and handsome – and there could be worse ways to spend a Saturday, right? We had an amazing time together, and the fun hasn’t stopped since then.

Mark proposed almost 3 years later, while we were hiking in beautiful Sedona, AZ. The love of the outdoors, especially the breathtaking Arizona scenery, has been a constant throughout our relationship, and it was the perfect spot to decide to spend the rest of our lives together.

As we began wedding planning, we knew that we wanted to showcase Arizona scenery – especially through the choice of venue. I think we knew the moment we stepped on the Casa Paloma lawn at El Chorro that we wanted to get married there. The venue features a stunning backdrop of Camelback Mountain and the property itself is simple, classic, rustic, and beautiful with wrap-around patios, fireplaces, and an open and airy event space.

The venue is stunning enough on its own, so we wanted the décor to be soft and natural with some rustic details. The florals from Sarah’s Garden featured natural bouquets and centerpieces in neutral whites, creams and blushes with pops of deeper pinks and peaches, surrounded by eucalyptus greenery. We also added some pops of color with rose quartz menus from Minted, paired with rosemary sprigs clipped from a friend’s garden that morning. The head table featured a long garland that complemented the greenery hung in the rafters of the event space.

Letters by Jennifer created stunning calligraphy for our custom signage, seating charts, and escort cards. We also featured some desert-inspired details in our cactus invitation suite, programs, and itineraries from Paperless Post and our custom logos from Snaptag Designs.

For my “something old” my mother created a ring bearer pillow and flower girl basket using lace from the bridesmaid’s dresses at her wedding. And my “something borrowed” was a turquoise bracelet that my grandfather gave to my aunt to wear on her wedding day.

We chose long, flowing, chiffon gowns in a pale blush from Dessy as the bridesmaids’ dresses. Paired with the silk ribbons from Frou Frou Chic, slightly moving in that day’s soft breeze, the bouquets were captured beautifully by Rachel Solomon Photography. Rachel and her team did an amazing job capturing all the moments and details from throughout the day.

And of course, the glue that held everything together was planning and coordination from Andrea Leslie and her team. We are so grateful for the outpouring of love and support from our friends and family and the hard work from this amazing team of vendors that created the best day of our lives!

Your Style Guide to a Chic Tropical Wedding

You know Oliver Fly as one of our favorite Paris-based photographers, but today he’s bringing us an inspiration shoot set in exotic Bali, Indonesia. Thoughtfully pieced together by Bali Event Styling, this is a tropical affair done right, and we’re so ready to grab ourselves a coconut drink and dive right in.

From Bali Event Styling… Khayangan Estate is Bali’s — if not Asia’s — quintessential destination wedding venue. Every inch of the property, from the moment one enters through its imposing teak wood gates, evokes an authentic aura of timeless elegance, an otherworldly environment that caters to modern day fantasies.

Our approach to the shoot was fine art with tropical accents melding soft pastels with a mixture of import and local florals and greeneries, stylish natural wood decor – Balinese arch and Louis chairs — with a spritz of gold cutlery, gilded tea lights, and crystal glassware for elegant effect.

Our wear florals featured Peonia, Astilbe, Astrantia, Eucalyptus populus. Eucalyptus nicolii, Bouvardia and Hellebores. The tablescape consisted of the same with additional Eustoma, Rose. and Frangipani, the latter lending a Balinese hint. The Table was layered with a light gray linen table cloth, two-toned silk runners, accented by silk ribbons and soft pink linen napkins.

We positioned Elephant ear leaves, coconuts, and vines at the entrance of the aisles. For the flower shower, we used Frangipani inside a woven basket made from coconut leaves. The natural wood wedding arch with Balinese carvings featured a floral mix of Anemones, Smilax, Astrantia, Ammimajus, Israeli cuscus and Salix.

Last but not least, we created welcome drinks using kelapa muda (young coconuts) with Frangipani flower, leafs, and sporting all natural bamboo straws.

A Garden Wedding Inspired by the Couple’s Love of Art

It’s not every day you come across a wedding quite as striking as this. And that’s saying a lot coming from an editor who sees pretty amazing nuptials on the reg. No surprise, vendor masterminds like A Modern Plan were behind the scenes on the making of this art-inspired celebration, and our beloved Jose Villa worked his usual magic behind the lens.

From the planner, A Modern PlanKatie + Clark are both from Alaska. They met in high school and are simply the most lovely couple. They share a strong love of art and traveling. Their wedding was filled with lots of personal touches. Katie’s love of the quaint flower shops in Paris was echoed in the beautiful abundant blooms displayed in vintage flower buckets by Brown Paper Design.

Clark and Katie’s affection of the arts was seen throughout their day. In the programs created by the bride and also their menus. Each menu had a print of one of their favorite paintings or drawings. The week leading up to the wedding date showed rain in the forecast. The rain added such an intimate touch to their day. A beautiful tent was set up at Beaulieu Garden for their reception and guests gathered around their ceremony with clear umbrellas. Such a beautiful day.

The Cutest French Café Wedding Ever

Dom and Amanda first met at a restaurant, so celebrating their wedding at Colette Grand Café felt like coming full circle. They wanted an intimate affair with only their closet friends and family, and the pros behind Lexington and Co. Events helped them achieve exactly that. Amanda stunned in an ethereal Carol Hannah skirt, which was graciously gifted by a fellow bride she met online! Read the full story below and don’t miss a single image from the incredible ARTIESE Studios.

From the bride, Amanda… Dom and I met in the summer of 2014, shortly after he moved to Toronto, at a busy downtown restaurant. Being the cheeky flirt that I am, I took off his baseball hat and put it on my head. He later told me that he fell in love in that moment. One drink turned into dinner, which turned into a second dinner at another restaurant down the street, and so began our shared love of good food, good wine, laughter, and being together. We have been inseparable ever since.

We wanted to create a special, intimate celebration with just close family and friends. As soon as we walked into Colette Grand Café, we fell in love with the space and booked it right away. The décor is classic French style: warm and elegant. The ceremony took place in the sunny white latticework pavilion outside, framed with hanging ivy pots and a floral backdrop.

We have such a talented group of artists in our family and circle of friends, and they added so much sparkle to the day. Family and friends played acoustic Edith Piaf and Beatles songs during the ceremony and classic love songs by Dean Martin during the cocktail reception. My mom read a beautiful indigenous poem that left not a dry eye in the room. My aunts did makeup and dress alterations, and my cousin made our vintage-inspired, delicious wedding cake. Exquisite details by my sister-in-law, who runs a DIY blog, tied everything together with a bow.

I would be remiss not to mention a very special person I met throughout this process. When we started planning the wedding, I came across the dress online. It was a skirt, actually. An ethereal, blush pink linen skirt worn by a beautiful bride named Katie who lives in Pennsylvania. I called a store in Toronto that carries the designer, Carol Hannah, told them I wanted to buy the skirt, and made a fitting appointment. My mom and I showed up on appointment day to take measurements, and when we got there, the owner of the shop told me that there had been a mixup, and that my dress wouldn’t arrive in time for the wedding. I was heartbroken. I called seamstresses to see if it could be recreated. It couldn’t. I called other boutiques across North America that sold the skirt. No one would sell me a sample. As a last resort, I emailed the photographer, who photographed Katie’s wedding, and explained the situation. The photographer promised me he would contact her. That night, I got an email from Katie. She said she wanted me to have the dress, and that she would put it in the mail the next day. Her only request was that I send her a picture of me in the dress, so that she could put it next to hers. I will never tire of telling this story. It’s an uplifting reminder of the good in people, and the kind of person I want to be.

Special thanks to our wedding planner Lexi for bringing our vision to life, and photographer Therese for capturing the most memorable day of our lives with such grace and professionalism. We ate dinner by candlelight, we laughed, and we cried. Just me, my best friend, and the people we love. It was the perfect way to start our life together.

A Cherry Blossom Printed Dress for the Ultimate Spring Inspiration

There are about a million reasons to adore this spring shoot, but first and foremost? The bride’s cherry blossom printed gown by Monique Lhuillier. It set the tone for a shoot filled with unexpected whimsy and Hylah White, Stacie Ford, Seniman Calligraphy, and La Tavola are a few key vendors who brought the vision to life. Spring brides, consider these images by Rebecca Yale all the inspiration you’ll ever need.

From Rebecca Yale… For this Spring wedding editorial we were inspired by the beauty of Kestrel Park, a 19th Century English Country home and gardens located in the heart of Santa Ynez, CA. Hylah White Special Events chose French blue to be the main color inspiration to play off the European feel of the venue. We loved how the light shade of blue complemented the cherry blossoms that were in bloom throughout the garden, which led us to choose a stunning cherry blossom printed gown from Monique Lhuillier’s unique RTW collection for our fashion forward bride’s ceremony dress.

Continuing the garden inspiration our bride changed into another beautiful RTW Monique Lhuillier gown with a beautiful high low hem allowing her to show off her beautiful floral booties designed by Joy Proctor for Bella Belle Shoes. Afterwards, the bride changed into a third stunning Monique Lhuillier bridal gown with a gorgeous lace bodice and layer upon layer of magnificent tulle for some golden hour portraits in the beautiful rolling hills of Santa Ynez.

The incredible Felissa from Of The Flowers made three unique bouquets inspired by each gown. Stacie Ford and Caitlynn Demetrician for Stacie Ford created beautiful and natural hair and makeup looks for each gown embracing and playing up the bride’s beautiful natural curls with delicate foliage inspired hair pieces by Hushed Commotion.

The reception table was set between the magnificent garden hedges and the stone castle-like horse stables, truly making the entire day feel like a fairy tale! Guests were welcomed to their seats with hand calligraphed place settings on their seats and each place setting had a beautiful torn edge menu with the same wax seal as the invitation.

Of the Flowers and Hylah White Special Events paired white and green centerpieces with beautiful marble slabs and a mixture of silver and crystal candlestick holders with french blue candles. Not to leave a detail untouched the scent of the flowers from the table was just as beautiful as the tablescape looked! A lovely dessert table was set beneath the blooming wisteria on the other side of the stables with macaron towers from Bottega Louie. The perfect ending to a fairytale wedding day!
